What is SIDS?
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the unexpected death of a 1 year old or under with limited health complications. Usually during the infant sleep schedule with no cause after an investigation.
Most Common between the ages of 1-4 months of age. It is known as the leading cause of death in the United States.
Some probable risk factors include brain abnormalities the infant could be experiencing while breathing or sleeping, Physical factors such as low body weight and respiratory infections and environmental factors through unsafe sleeping conditions.
National Library of Medicine: How SIDS are researched.
The National Library of Medicine were critical in regards to conveying convincible research of SIDs that has been apparent for the past two decades.
When discussing proper HR monitoring it issued probable drawbacks, false alarms startling the parents to the expense of the hardware
Clarifying how SIDs is multifactorial, no clear indication of what could lead to death. Even as parents use appropriate Home Monitor systems it can be proven not effective due to the large scale of randomness that is associated with SIDS.
Non-Contact Monitoring of SIDs
Evidence proving that impaired cardiovascular control, including reduced heart rate variability (HRV) and progressive heart rate (HR) decline contributes to SIDs, with non contact cameras providing early detection and prevention.
Discussing SIDs in relation towards camera based monitorization instead of standard Heart Rate based ones can prove to be successful in terms of reacting based on your instinct.
Camera-based vital sign monitoring offers a safe, affordable, and scalable solution for detecting early SIDS risk factors. By enabling continuous, non-contact HRV tracking, this technology could revolutionize infant care and reduce SIDS-related fatalities.
An important factor for these discoveries leads to the development of newer and “revolutionizing” technologies that would greatly benefit infant care. Where we strive for the betterment of families that are affected in these tragedies pushing the boundary of healthcare service.
Statistics: The Development of SIDS
SIDS trends throughout the years
The data and statistics of SIDS are presented through the following. Presented with the thought of accidental suffocation/strangulation in the bed where SIDS can happen easily.
In 2022 alone there were around 3700 (SUID) infant deaths in the United States where 1529 deaths were related to SIDS. With various levels of statistics that can be analyzed and observed, ensuring the severity of SIDS and the importance it is for it to be documented
2022 Percentage
For the following chart shows the breakdown of of sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) by cause of death. In 2022, 41% were SIDS, 31% were unknown cause, and 28% were ASSB. The percentage of the SIDS are apparent, with the number of infants being affected due to complications of SIDS.
The rates of SIDS are apparent in infants, being the highest percentage amongst other dangerous circumstances reflects the lethality of SIDS.
